Pioneering STEM: Dr. Ashanti Johnson’s Impact on Oceanography and STEM Equity

At Design Connect Create, we celebrate Dr. Johnson's contributions and her commitment to inspiring and mentoring the next generation of STEM leaders.

Dr. Ashanti Johnson, a geochemist and chemical oceanographer, is one of the first Black women in her field and the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in chemical oceanography from Texas A&M University. Her research focuses on aquatic radio geochemistry, studying environmental impacts on marine and freshwater ecosystems in the Arctic.

A passionate advocate for STEM equity, Dr. Johnson earned the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) in 2010. She also leads the MSPHD's Institute, empowering minority students in Earth sciences.
